Julianne Stokes Books
I was drawn to art as a child. After exploring different mediums my passion for art came full
circle as I now focus on children’s picture books. I am the author and illustrator of ABC Healthy,
Dolphins Don’t Eat Donuts, and Ski Bird and Powder Piggy: Race to the Top.
I studied Studio Art at the University of Colorado Boulder. After taking classes in teaching art and teaching
literature to children I knew I wanted to be involved with children’s art. It wasn’t until several
years later after a brief stint in teaching and having two of my three kids that I finally took a leap
and joined the SCBWI (Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators) in 2012.
An appreciation for children’s book creation is accumulated as you go through the process. Each
book takes a lot of time and planning. I create the illustrations using watercolor, acrylic, and ink.
I then work in Adobe programs to layout the images and text. I gather the necessary ISBN,
Library of Congress Number, and copywrite. I create the entire design for the books and send it
to print. The final step is getting the books into the hands of children.
My happiest moments in the children’s book world are during author visits. I love when a child tells me their favorite healthy food, the laughs from Dolphins Don’t Eat Donuts, or the excitement of ski season
brought on by a skiing bird and snowboarding pig. Alongside children’s books, I create original
greeting cards, canvas bags, and have wool figures made that are characters from my books. I
have many books on the horizon.
